Tachometer Cable Grounding?
« on: November 11, 2014, 13:20:31 »
1966 230SL Automatic
I wasn't sure how to search for this because I'm not really sure what this is.  I have replaced the speedo and tach cables on this car and found on the old cables that there was a copper(?) clamp/bracket that joined the two (as I recall).  The outer plastic covering of the cable was stripped away seemingly so that the clamp would contact the metal underlayment.  Does this sound right?  Can someone respond and let me know what this is really for and the proper arrangement?

Much appreciated,
Harry

Hello Harry,

Yes, some of these early MB cars used a separate grounding strap on the cables. I believe that these small ground straps help protect the dash  instruments  in the event main that chassis grounding is lost. They appear to be a redundant back-up system.  I do know a list member who fried his engine temperature gauge. During dash repairs, he accidentally left a chassis ground wire loose. When he went to start the engine, the engine temperature gauge  became the only conductor for ground current. The gauges small capillary tube could not handle the load and burnt in two!

Wow.  That would hurt your feelings!  Makes sense - thanks.  I'll get this hooked back up.  I appreciate the feedback very much.
