Long fuel pump "bellows" (sliding) seal replacement part??
« on: January 10, 2015, 05:36:11 »
We have had several discussions here about repairing the long (old style) fuel pump and George Des has documented that it can be done with a bit of effort, provided the so called "bellows" seal is still intact.
I have added a diagram showing the different parts of the pump with the correct Bosch part numbers into the technical manual:
http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Fuel/FuelPumpRebuildEarly
Bosch calls this seal (#34 in the parts drawing) a "sliding packing ring" with the part number: 1 440 282 010.
Using Google one can find an associated "National Stock Number" (NSN): 2910-12-141-7724
and cross-references to other manufacturers numbers where it was used:
http://www.nsn-now.com/Indexing/ViewDetail.aspx?QString=2910121417724

We are wondering whether we have any erudite members here who can use this information to find perhaps a replacement part for this seal. It would make future refurbishing attempts a lot more successful.

Alfred,

Thanks for posting this. Per our recent discussion, this is the one part that needs to be in good shape on any pump being rebuilt or another found from a donor pump. Many of the other parts can be sourced from metric bearing and seal suppliers. The nuts, screws, washers, brushes etc can all be had fairly easily as well. There are many places where the armature can be rewound and a new comm added. I have even been able to duplicate the tab washer and woodruff key using emachineshop that are critical to driving the bellows and impeller. The bellows though has been impossible to find, fix adequately or reverse engineer. I have my doubts as to the long term viability of replacing this seal with a normal radial type rubber lip seal as we also discussed. The Bosch diagram you were able to find does provide some glimmer of hope though. I was surprised that there actually is an NSN and a number of interchange numbers for that seal indicating that it was perhaps used in other applications and perhaps even still available. Hopefully, some closer to the manufacturers that pop up using these interchange numbers will be able to tell us if that is the case.

Alfred,
Is it possible to obtain the same diagram and part #s for the short pump, it would be very helpful to be able to source the correct seals for the electrical connections (the square ones).

Eric,
sorry I do not have any documentation on the short pump.
However, you might ask Babak ("Benzrestorer") since he sells a repair kit for the pump that comes with an instruction sheet showing an exploded view of the pump.
Perhaps the company that makes the kit for him has the information you want: http://www.toritinker.com/gallery.html
