removing oil tube from engine casing
« on: February 02, 2015, 23:13:55 »
Hi,
How do you remove the oil dipstick tube from the casing?
And most importantly, how do you fix it back in place?
I'm getting parts cadmium plated and I believe this should be.
I own a 1965 230SL which has the old style dipstick (the one with the big cap)
Thanks!

If the engine is still together and in the car, remove the small steel oil pan. I believe you can then drive it out from below. Heat the aluminum casting with a torch before you drive the tube out. Make sure to use the right size tool to drive the tube out. Use heat and the correct size tool to drive it back in place.

Hi Joe,
as always, you are an infinite source of wisdom!
I have the casing in my hands as I'm rebuilding my engine.
The tube is simply press fit in there? No sealer or anything that glues it in place?
Thanks again!

Yes, a very tight fit.  A bit of sealer for installation is good!
