Stan,

Kate said that same thing on advising the MB Club so that they can update their judges.  There are a couple of very easy classic errors that would not take much to fix.  I would not be game to tell the owner, he does not take comment kindly as he is in the industry and flips some of the cars.

It is an interesting and good learning exercise and does allow everyone to look and see what may be wrong and then look at their own cars.  I think it is tho only way to get the knowledge on what is and isnt correct for the purest and also some very easy fixed just for the daily drivers as well.   I know there were several I did not know were right or wrong.  I might make it a monthly segment on the Forum.  So long as some are happy to have their cars picked to bits. :o

I will start with a photo from mine next month ;D

Garry,

this is how the great ideas come up!
Running a thread that would somewhat complement the Motoring investments, but in more practical way and with discussion, would be a fantastic initiative. In fact this is what this forum has done since inception, but maybe a fresh view would not hurt :)
Thanks (and off course regards to Kate :))

.../... the window winder handle positions.../...
Being the thorough company that it is, Mercedes had a specification for this, too... :D

M-B say, the button of the handle should point upwards at an angle; toward the lower corner of the windshield; i.e. 10 O'clock position when the right side window is fully closed.
I attach here that page from the Workshop manual, section 72-4.

No AC on mine but does have the shroud. Surprised to hear the euro models did not have the shroud as it seems it would be of benefit no matter where the car was driven?

Ditto. Mine is a US late 230.

Garry,

I recall that the info sheet on the front seat of this winning car said "1971".

I asked the owner how often he drove the car, he looked at me slightly shocked and said...he NEVER drives it. He said that about once every 4 weeks he starts it and lets it idle for 20-30 minutes. When I asked him how he got enjoyment from such a beautiful car he said through showing it and selling them.

There are many other "oddities" with this car including the strange wipers, the 107 series fuel pump and a lot of additional wiring in the engine bay ( which appeared to be too many wires for an alarm system). I'm still not certain about the plastic coolant reservoir - he has it installed around the wrong way in any case, and the clamps are yellow zinc instead of silver......
Last year this car won about 4 awards at the concours - it totally cleaned up. Mine ran runners up to this car last year in its class, despite not having any of these "oddities" listed by everyone.

I guess that was my fault, I must have entered in the "pimp my ride class" by mistake....ouch!  ;D

It was still a very enjoyable day as I never tire of hearing compliments about our beautiful cars and it was enjoyable critiquing the winning cars with Gary.

Cheers

The guy who can't seem to get his camera working is bit of an oddity - I can say that without fear because ........ it's me!

I enjoyed reading this thanks to everyone who contributed!

As you can see Gary, never use your photos taken of this car as reference for correctness ???

Guess what Garry - That's what I was doing!  And that's why I had a camera in lieu of the phone.  I actually really enjoyed talking to the owners.  Mine is a 230SL and it's a never ending work in progress but our mate in Croydon looks after me very well.
