Hole in Trunk/Boot

Hello All,

Well the restoration is coming along slowly but surely. We're a bit confused as to what the hole from the trunk/boot to the soft top storage compartment is for (see image).
Any ideas? Thanks

Most use it to open the soft top boot when the cable or handle breaks, or when the soft top gets stuck in the boot.

Mice use it to get into your soft top and eat it.

And never too early to set up the emergency opening mechanism utilising some strong cord and said hole!

Tie a piece of string (para cord; something strong) onto the obvious appropriate place on the catch and feed it into the boot! Take a look. You'll figure it out in a second.

I thought that was the case however I have been to pagoda events inwhich I saw more than one car rightly or wrongly with this hole covered.

I can't imagine why that hole would need to be covered.  The holes for the two hinges are many times larger and cannot be closed.

Was: Papyrus White 717G with Turquoise MBtex 112 and Kinderseat
Is: Dark Blue 332G with Dark Blue Leather (5300, I think)

I do not think we are talking about the hinges, but a hole dead center just above the floor of the trunk

No, I understand that.  I just question why close the hole when it's not the only one and it is, by far, smaller than the others.  Closing it serves no purpose.
