running problems
« on: May 10, 2015, 19:19:59 »
Hi all
Real desparate advice needed please, on my 2964 230sl. After driving for a while the car will start to pull back on me and not go any faster. Sometimes when i come to a stop it might even also cut out completly. So far I have cleaned the tanked and replaced the mesh filter. Tank was clean and old mesh filter seemed resonable. This happened year ago. All has been fine upto now. It has just done the same thing last week. So now I have changed the fuel filter in engine bay. The fuel in the filter housing did have loads of particles in it. Anyway went out for long drive today. No problems at all  apart from on way back when the symptons started all over again. Pulling back on me. Left the car for while then started up again iand it drove again without any problems. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this. Also if i am right i may of heard couple of faint pops coming from rear of exhaust.

Thanks

FWIW I would look for ignition problems. Spark plugs, coil, wires. Also would check the linkages. Are you able to check the fuel mixture with a CO analyzer? Good luck, I'm sure others with more experience will chime in.

Still sounds like a fuel problem to me.  Are the lines clear, are you getting the right volume of fuel from the fuel pump coming back into the tank (see archives),  the fuel cools the injection pump as it heads back to the tank so could it be overheating?

Just my $.02.

Did you break down on the A3 today? There was a gold 113 on the roadside around 1600h but on the opposite carriageway.

Where in Surrey are you? Drop me a pm and we can take a look to see if we can't eliminate a few issues before we ask a ninja for help!

A fuel pressure and volume check when the engine is acting up, will tell you if a filter/screen is clogged or if the fuel pump is faulty.

Yes that was me lol on the A3 hard shoulder. The stupid thing is after the AA turned up, I got in the car and drove all the way home with him following me with no problems at all. This is what happens seems to clear itself and out of the blue come back the problem.

Thanks

There is a fuel filter in the electric fuel pump as well.
If you found particles in the engine bay filter, larger ones will be caught in the electric pump filter.
I'm only in New Malden.
Pop down for a cuppa! (James Howard is also in the vicinity and can join in)

Hi Naj

Thanks for the info. Wil check my pump for filter. Just got home so will try and look soon. I have also ordered from Bosch today new ignition coil, rotor arm, distributor cap and something else cannot think of it right now. Does't cost a lot so no harm replacing them anyway. Where abouts are you in new malden anyway ?

Thanks

I've sent you a PM. We should probably avoid putting too much detail on the open part of the site, sad as it is to say. You may want to remove your mobile number.

Running problems all seem to be fixed now. Replaced coil, rotor arm, distribitor cap, points and resistor. Runs really well now.
Thanks
