brake pad confusion - early 230 SL
« on: April 29, 2015, 14:29:39 »
I've recently made the mistake of ordering new front brake pads for my 230 SL (built 1964, but registered 1965) from a vendor on eBay.de. Although they were listed as being compatible with a 230 SL, they didn't fit which caused a lot of annoyance since I had to pay labour charges anyway and the car nearly failed its' annual vehicle examination. I've since been made aware that early 230 SL's used Girling brakes and the later cars ATE. A negative review prompted the vendor (who BTW was downright rude and threatening in a very un-German way) to send me these charts telling me that I had ordered their part # 20011 while I actually needed the part # 20034 which they don't have in stock... :-(
This would be fine if I hadn't confused myself even further by searching the correct pads on the UK eBay as well, where I found these part also listed as compatible: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MGB522-MINTEX-Brake-Pad-Set-disc-brake-front-/301581763332?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Car+Make%3AMercedes-Benz%7CPlat_Gen%3AW113&hash=item4637ac8304
They all have different dimensions... ???
If anyone could advice me which ones to go for (though obviously not the #20011) I would be much less confused and a lot happier :-)

Thanks in advance

I believe both your pix are for ATE pads.

The Girling pad should look like my pic.
MB Part # 000 586 2742

p.s: If my pic is correct, I have a NOS set which you can have if you pay the postage

Hi Naj and Jowe and thanks for your feedback.
Naj - that's very kind of you, but I simply can't accept them for free, so please pm me your payment details and at least add the cost of a decent bottle of wine to the amount :-)

Best regards

Ulf (in Denmark BTW, will reply your PM with my address)

A decent bottle of wine? Be careful with that!
Last year I took my wife the this place:

https://www.waterside-inn.co.uk/

There was a bottle of wine on their wine list for £25000!!

Ouch...that's a very indecent price, unless it was salvaged from the Titanic or something :-)
