Oil filter/air filter on FI Pump-cleaning?

I have run across references to removing and cleaning both the air filter and oil filter on FI pump. Are these filters cleaned by soaking in clean solvent, or are they replaced?  Thanks!

Solvent .. I use Kero.
 The most important attention you want to be checking on your new purchase is the OIL LEVEL on you pump..
 You have the early style pump and it has it's own resevoir..
 The dip stick is at the rear of the pump [ "T" handle/screw off ]
  Check the level with the Dip-Stick screwed all the way in -- and check oil condition..
 I mention this as this car is new to you . but you may already have found this out ...but good info for anyone else reading this...
 I know many a 230/250 owners who have NEVER checked the pump for oil level and many who don't even know about it..........

Thank you, but I have a '70 280sl which I believe does not have the oil level stick for the pump?  Am I correct? I will clean both filters with solvent, thank you!

Hello.  Yes, your car should not have the Fuel Injection Pump with seperate oil resivoir.  Regardless, there is no filter for the oil in the FI Pump, only an air filter.  The air get's pulled through the filter, through the pump (when engine is cold), around the engine, and into the intake manifold.

 Sorry, had you confused with James Saylor.. he just picked up a 230sl, ..
 so, yes, clean the air filter and forget the rest.. you have the newer pump..
Anyone with the earlier pumps , both the air filter and oil filter should be kept kleen.. the oil filter is in the vent cap and blockage here will not allow the pump to vent properly, resulting in oil cavitation, ... not good for the pump or governor.

 Too many post for me ..
 I belong over at Mercedesshop and do heavy email diagnostics traffic, so excuse my confusion on that one..

On the '70 280SL the fuel injection pump should have a paper element air filter P/N A 000 075 11 32. It must be replaced. You can inspect it after removing, using a 22 mm narrow open end wrench. Shine a light into it and look for a broken/ ripped/ deteriorated pleated paper insert. Mine was half gone. This allows contaminants to enter. Not good.

 Rodd,
 It is not an oil filter as the name implies [ filtering of the pump oil], but rather just a vent cap filter, like one would see on/in a breather cap .
 It keeps the oil in and the outside dirt out, while letting the pump res vent so as to not let it build internal pressures..[ no good]
 I have seen them so dirty that the pump can not breath, so it is recommended that they be kept clean and clear..simple kero soak and blow out w/air.
 Dusty road conditions usually accumulate here as there is always a light film of oil at the vent and it attracts dust/dirt.
  Same goes for the vent on the left axle tube at the differential.. they should also be serviced once ia a while.. what I have seen here is complaints of rear pinion seal leaks , as well as axle seals, and the remedy is simply clearing the vent to stop the internal pressures that develop when vent
filter is plugged..
As you know , the later pumps did not need venting , as they are naturally asperated to the crankcase with the improved lube design..
