UN Identified Object
« on: July 24, 2015, 02:25:56 »
When I removed the air louver from the left side of the dash, a strange object fell off from behind. It looks like an optical lens used to enhance light (photo attached). Can anyone identify this object and its uses? Thank you.

Is it the cover for the map reading light on the glove-box?

I am guessing the lens from a child's flashlight.  After removing many coins from the CD slots of radios when i worked for Saab I can safely state that no slot is safe. Judging by the age of our cars:

How big is it.  I agree that it looks like a light lens, but not a lens that I have seen in a pagoda.

Ewww.  When I go junkyarding the most common things to find in cars are:  bibles, porn, bills, cigarette butts and fast food trash, condoms (new and used), medications, old clothes.  Sometimes photographs.  Sometimes cars will have the life story of the previous owner.  More often lately they have been cleaned out better.

I know I've related this story here before but it was a long time ago:

I found a pair of butt floss type panties in a 280SL once. Nice red frilly ones; size: medium, or there abouts. They weren't in the car though. They were wrapped around the cam shaft.

Customer ( no longer, but his secret is safe ) complained of stange sounds coming from his engine. He dropped his car off and I noticed a very hot looking young gal driving a late model Benz waiting to drive off with him. I wasn't introduced and I didn't ask.........

Next day we pulled the valve cover and there was the problem. Yep, them there panties was all wrapped around the cam shaft. We removed the offending object, set the valves, looked the car over and then I called him to pick up his car.

So, next day he shows up with a different late model Benz with a different woman behind the wheel. This one was older and not nearly so hot looking. She waved, but again no introductions - I kind of figured maybe this was the wife...

'' So, did you find the problem? '' he asked.
'' Oh yeah...........'' It was all I could do to keep a straight face.
'' What was it? ''
He really wanted to know, too. I reached under the work bench and retrieved a clear plastic bag. We had used some masking tape to close it up and one of the guys in the shop had marked it, '' Exhibit BF. '' His face went pale then it went beet red.
'' Ah.......where did you find that?! '' He was clearly embarassed as well as very surprised.
'' It was all wrapped around your cam shaft. Any idea how that got in there?'' I asked seriously while faking my conclusions.

Apparently, he had stopped for gas, added some oil, and then forgot to put the filler cap back on. After driving for a while he noticed that the car was really smoking so he stopped to check it out. Calling to the mystery girl to find something in the car to plug the oil filler hole, she promptly produced something she didn't need. The next day he bought another filler cap and when he opened the hood the red lacy object was gone. Figuring it fell out, he replaced the filler cap and washed all of the oil off the hood. All was well until his engine started making noises.

'' So, you want them back? Maybe hang them on the wall in your shop as a memento? '' Hey, it was fun watching him squirm. He glanced at the woman in his car and promptly declined.
'' Uh, no..... you can keep them. How much do I owe you? '' he asked nervously, clearly not wanting anyone to see the offending object.
'' This one's on the house, '' I offered. ( I should of been paying him for such high quality entertainment )

He sold the car right after that. No idea why though. ;)

Related to Dan's story - when 19 I was cruising the south of France with three friends in 2 Triumph Spitfires and at one point my alternator bearing seized and we had to disconnect it. To keep the waterpump going we had to rig up a makeshift 'fan belt' for which we first used our tent lines, then our sneakers' strings (so literally going on a shoe string) and when the last of those wore out got stranded late at night, along the side of a two-lane provincial road. The next morning it was Sunday and while we were pondering our next move, hood up, a car with a family on their way to church stopped to see if they could help. Upon hearing the problem the husband exchanged just a few words with his wife who ... Immediately proceeded to take off her pantyhose! The husband expertly fabricated a 'fan belt' from it while we looked on in disbelief, and they sent us on our way.
That pantyhose lasted for 500 miles all the way to Brussels, where we secured another pantyhose that took us the rest of the way home to Holland. Maybe we should start another thread of 'automotive uses for women's lingerie'?

That's very clever indeed!  I would never have thought of making a temporary belt out of pantyhose.  Something to add to an emergency road kit!

Thanks to all contributors to my post regarding the un identified object. The mystery is still unsolved, it is not the map reading lamp and it is 1.5" in diameters. It seems that it does belong to the Pagoda and it goes along with all of the stories of treasures found at the junk yard.
