Fuel Injector Wrench
« on: March 17, 2014, 01:38:53 »
Hi,
I would like to remove the fuel injectors on my 250SL as I think the no.3 injector is malfunctioning but it appears a special wrench may be required. Does any one know where I can procure the proper wrench? Is it a Hazet 2768-1 17mm valve wrench?

Thanks for your help,
Jim Cochran

Jim,

On the 280 engine, you use a 17mm crows foot wrench for the fuel line. I think it the same for a 250. The MB number is 000 589 68 03 00. Hazet # is 4550-1. It is a nice tool to have but in a pinch, just use a crows foot wrench. Classic Center has them and was surprisingly reasonable. Is available from other sources but some can be $$$$$$ for the same tool. The 2768-1 is the crows foot wrench used to adjust the valves. Also a nice tool to have. I don't think that one will work here because there isn't enough clearance for the fuel line. The 2768-1 is a heavy duty wrench and maybe too fat to get in near the valve cover. The 4550-1 is more dainty and not meant for a high torque. Should be able to find a picture on the web for 4550-1.

Once you get the fuel fitting off, you use a 19mm socket to remove the injector. When removing the fuel line, try to hold the 19mm injector body with a wrench. That will prevent the injector from turning and in turn binding the fuel line. Make sure you torque injector and fuel fitting to specs.

Wallace,
Thanks for the help. Do you happen to know the torque specs.?

Thanks,

According to Haynes which I recall is the same as the BBB, injectors are 25 ft. lbs. I use a very small amount of nickel based anti seize on the injector threads. The injector fitting must be less and is not as critical at 18 ft. lbs. In theory because the fuel fitting has less torque than the injector, the fitting should always loosen before the injector. You know what they say about theories.....

I have bought tools from this UK company, "Motorsport Tools" and had good service,
good price and prompt delivery, I have no connection with them although they are within 200 miles of me.

If you remove the valve cover it will leave a lot more room to work. You can use an ordinary open end wench if you don't have anything else.

I highly recommend this wrench:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231603938884

Or google BGS 8434

The quality is as good or better than the Hazet wrench, and I have both.  If you want to remove injector lines this tool makes it MUCH easier than anything else.   And it is inexpensive.
