Hazard Warning Switch Diagram

Hi All,

I recently picked up a Bosch hazard warning switch from ebay - part No 0 336 285 001. It is a big old beast and I wondered if it has an integral relay?

I have a suitable hole in my dash and am ready to fit it. Does anybody have a wiring diagram? My car is a 1963 and there is no wiring present for hazard lights at the moment so it's a new install.

Coloured Wiring Diagrams are here in the Technical Manual but they are only available to Full Members.  :P  :o

Hello, Peter,

Wiring the hazard flasher is pretty straight forward  ;D ;D

You can buy the 6 pin bushings and the 6 pin plug from MB.

R = Right Side Indicator (black  wire with green runner)
L = Left side indicator (black wire with white runner)
You can pick up these two feeds from the multifunction switch plug under the dash.

30 is the '+'  feed. I used the '+' feed on the door light switch, but ideally should come from the fuse box.
31 is Earth or Ground.

You have to interrupt the feed to the normal flasher. So, Cut the wire (terminal marked 15 on the flasher unit) and the live side goes to terminal 15 and the other side to 49a.

Job done.

The internals of this flasher unit are all mechanical. Our UK MB Club Technical Director just converted one to these for me to electronic operation. He used a multifunction relay from a W201, but that's another story.

Hi Naj,

Just a double check.

On my "normal" (cylindrical canister type) flasher unit, terminal 15 is fed from Fuse No 5 (switched +ve i.e. live when ignition switch is turned to position 1 or 2).

If I understand you correctly I do the following
1. Disconnect the feed to flasher unit terminal 15 from Fuse No 5.
2. Run a new wire from Fuse No 5 to terminal 15 of my new hazard warning switch.
3. Reconnect the feed to "normal" flasher unit terminal 15 to terminal 49a of my new hazard warning switch.

Would appreciate your confirmation.

Hi again Naj,

I have looked at the wiring digarams (1963 230sl vs 1970 280sl) and it seems to show that this new hazard switch actually replaces the normal flasher unit.

On the 1970 280sl diagram the switched +ve supply (originally to the flasher unit terminal 15 on the 63 230sl)  is now routed to the new hazard switch terminal 15 (this is as you described).

On the 1970 280sl diagram the new hazard switch terminal 49A is connected to the steering column stalk connection 54 (instead of the wire from terminal 54 of the normal flasher unit as per the 63 230sl).

Do you know what the difference is between taking this "direct" approach as described above vs routing through the old flasher unit as you described? Electrickery is not my strongpoint !

Hello again, Peter,

AFAIK, the Bosch 0 3336 285 001 should be wired as I explained.
I have a Hella unit on my car which works the same.

I believe the later Bosch 0 336 285 002 is all electronic and is wired they way you are describing, not needing the current indicator flasher unit any longer.

I guess you could easily try and see what you have.

I am going to experiment and will get back to you.  Whilst trying to research this I came across this useful website identifying Bosch terminals for wiring.
