Interesting that Khan have put that together. The only time I ever come across them it's to do with insane Land Rover work and mental 4x4s. And they're expensive, too. Lots of Ruskies cutting about in them in Town these days. Their cars look quite extreme. The Pagoda is stunning, but in one shot there looks to be a discrepancy between front and rear height. Bonkers price.

That sold at an auction last year for around £100,000 then appeared on their website. I guess they rely on wealthy customers just happening across it in their showroom and not really knowing market prices. I see it a lot with early Corvettes.

It does look lovely though....

There is an auction for a 280SL at the Motorclassica in Melb. on October 25th for a car that could set a new record for Australia. The car in question is the 2014 MBCV concours winner (mine went runners up that year) and also won a number of other awards - it was also critiqued previously in this forum for a host of minor errors that should not have happened. A beautiful car none the less, that is listed with an expected sell range of AU$210K - AU$240K. I have no doubt he invested more than that - which was quite a big call to make given it was a Californian model which is not overly practical in Melbourne.

I happened to stumble across the advertisement of the impending auction on a UK website. I suspect the owner wants nearer to the AU$300K mark  - maybe hoping a UK buyer might snap it up for a mere GBP140K.

Either way a new Aust record is likely to be set.

What can I say Rob. It will certainly be an interesting auction.

It certainly was a good restoration, just a pity about the bits that were wrong but will certainly raise the bar a bit higher.

I'm not sure which group is Auctioning it - usually Shannons does at Motorclassica. I think Shannons deduct that from the seller, or have got that wrong? Between Shsnnons and Bonhams I thought one took it from the buyer and the other the vendor.

What concerns me about this auction is the fact that nowhere does it become apparent that this is not a convertible, but a California coupe. I can just see someone buying this long distance and finding that out too late?

Very good point Cees and I see it still has all the brake booster and radiator labels stuck to the rocker cover. Doh.    :D :D

Believe me, I tried, but I cannot get my anthracite grey this shiny. Perhaps it is metallic?
Also, under body type it is listed as a convertible. As Cees already says that is a little misleading for the Cal Coup.

I will say the paint / body work on that car was as good as I have seen.

The lighting at the Motorclassica (where this photo was taken and mine attached) might also have something to do with it. My paintwork is no where near as good but still appears decent in a photo using an old iphone

Hi,

It may raise the bar overall, of course pending auction results, but does that also mean there will be a small price difference in the future if any between the roadster and coupe(2+2) or will maybe perhaps the RHD coupe exceed the price of the roadster merely due to the rarity plus possibly a fairly significant overall weight reduction due to the soft top compartment and frame being absent all together  ;D :o

Yem,

That very discussion was had at my place yesterday when Mark Evans and Michael Reid  and I got together for lunch.  It appears that there is little difference in the pricing for the roadster and the Coupe lately which surprises us as I would have thought the CC was not a very viable proposition in a climate that can be sunny in the morning and raining in the afternoon.

Garry,

Quote
CC was not a very viable proposition

Sure, that is totally subjective (not disagreeing with your comments) based on the fact that lot of members as I have have observed on conversations love to just keep the hard top on almost permanently due to the nicer look, hence the soft top never sees the light of the day.

Sold for AU$210K.
I would say that is lower than he expected (range quoted was $210-240K) and I assume he invested more than that in it.
Hard to say what effect the lack of Soft Top had on the price (was a Californian model which is not so popular / practical in Aust.).

I did have a detailed exterior look at the car last afternoon.  Upon close inspection it is not as good as I expected especially considering the price.  The flaws I observed, the RH door appeared to have an increasing gap when closed fully shut and was sitting proud of the rear quarter panel when viewed at an angle, the rear boot lid was not sitting right as the left and right heights differed and was mismatching.  There were various other flaws even as I looked underneath.  The entire chassis underneath was painted in what appeared  to be the body colour (meant to be the cosmoline/root beer look), and the notches were almost like a ridge/step and lacked the finesse of what was done at the factory (maybe the lead wiping technique was not used).  This vehicle will most likely not appeal to a buyer looking for a close to factory finish.  I did not get to view inside the boot or engine compartment.  I am sure the new owner will have nothing to do and just enjoy the car for many years.  Concours restoration it may be, but definitely a lot to consider including it being not to factory specification.

Regards,

Yem

There is a tremendous amount of time and money it takes to do comprehensive restoration on a W113. That being said we have been seeing many examples on the market like this where the price is reflecting the bill that it took to get it condition that it is. On the other side of the pendulum if its showroom original or in other terms "as if its been untouched by human hands" then how do you put a price on that. They are only original once.
In the end these cars are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
