Cylinder head waterway corrosion
« on: November 17, 2015, 21:23:41 »
Hi all, 1965 230 sl going through a complete rebuild. I have removed the cylinder head and i found that 1 of the large inserts in the waterways on the exhaust side is missing, another is loose [which i have removed together with 4 small ones on the other side also affected by corrosion and almost closed up.]

Because the corrosion to each of the holes has removed the little dimple which locates the new ali inserts the correct way round i wonder if anyone has a picture of a non corroded head so that the weld repair will locate them correctly. Thankyou,Gordon

Generally speaking, I believe the ports on the water inserts should point towards the valve seat areas deep inside the head.

Thankyou Benz Dr,   do the new inserts come with the distorted top edge or is this formed by knocking the edge of the new inserts into a preformed recess?  Thankyou, Gordon

I think they have that small notch built into the top rim.

So i just need to establish which direction the holes in the inserts face.[some have 1 hole in them and some with 2]  Machine shop checked the weights of the new Mercedes pistons prior to balancing the crank and found almost 7 grams difference between heaviest and lightest
