Front and Rear crank seal 1970 280SL

I currently have my car in the shop having the transmission rebuilt and the clutch replaced. The front and rear crank seals are leaking. I asked my mechanic if the rear crank seal can be replaced while the trans and clutch are out. My mechanic says he can replace both seals but would remove the subframe and while he had it out would re seal the lower pan of the engine. Two questions: 1) Can both seals be replaced this way? and 2) Can the rear crank seal be replaced with just the transmission and clutch removed?

The crankshaft has to be removed to replace the rear crank seal.

to get everything very tight it's important not only to replace the crank seals but to check/renew the knurling condition of the Borgman ring. Pictures see here: www.pagodentreff.de/diskussionsforum/t14286-lverlust-2.html.

I agree. However, removing the sub frame isn't part of that process.  You can replace the front seal after the rad and front pulleys are removed.

 How much are the seals actually leaking? It's very common for the rear seal to leak a bit. A small quarter sized spot on the floor over night isn't worth the effort nor is something an inch across. If it looks like the Exxon Valdees just crash landed under your car, then you have a problem.
