1969 280 sl passenger door glass repair
« on: February 14, 2016, 08:01:54 »
I'm doing the bottom aluminum guides on my door glass. I have attached the guides to the bottom of the glass using the black felt. I used a marine product called Sikaflex for attaching the blocks. I am also replacing the plastic glass inserts which I ordered from Neimoller in Germany, Ouch!!! I need to remove the chrome trim on the outside of the door at the whiskers. I need to know how the trim comes off, how do  I pry it to get it off the
trim clips. Thanks

Travellerdogs, the chrome trim lifts straight up. It is held in place by clips that fasten to the top door seam. Remove the single screw holding the top of the door seal in place and move it out of the way. Start at the edge of the door with a thin screw driver and insert it lengthwise into the opening between the body and trim. Move it in untill you feel the first clip and gently pry down so the tip of the screwdriver raises the trim. Use a rag between the screwdriver and body to prevent paint damage. Slowly work your way down the door evenly. Be carefull not to bend the trim.

Ease of removal depends a little bit on what kind of clips are installed and how many.
As Naj describes here, there are two types that hold the chrome trim. If you have "clip 2" in addition to "clip 1" then have lots of patience and be very careful!

Travellerdogs - try and replace the cat wiskers as well as they help give the window a nice finish and also protect the glass.

The door whiskers are all new. The car was stripped and painted before I bought it about 7 years ago. Previous owner was just starting the restoration when he died. I bought it out of the estate and have finished the restoration. Am just doing a new exhaust system and a few small details that need to be done. BTW I have bought the exhaust components out of AutohausAZ if anybody is interested.
