Perhaps if you measure the critical dimensions of the pistons with a micrometer so their condition can be assessed against new?

Main things to look for is piston skirt wear and ring land wear.

Keyvan, if you find a taker, give him my phone number.  I have a shed full of used pistons that need a good home.  :)

I do have a friend who builds Merlin engines for a living and he can sell old pistons for a fair chunk of cash but I don't think Pagodas have quite achieved Spitfire/Lancaster/Mosquito status just yet.

If it's clean it might be worth more if it saves someone from buying a whole set and overboring their engine. Joe sold me a set of 6 nice stock bore pistons for the aforementioned $5 each 15 years ago. I ran them 23,000 miles and they just keep humming along. At that time I couldn't get stock bore ones from Mahle and I didn't want to bore the block after only 65,000 miles.  The engine is sitting on the garage floor during restoration and I am having a hard time deciding if it is time to bore it or not?

I think a lot of this depends on rarity and the value of new pistons. Anyone price a set of early 230SL pistons lately or even late ones?

Ah yes, I remember that well Pat (Shvegel).  I remember selling you a flywheel at the time also.  Since then I have re-supplied the same shed with numerous used pistons. Re-using used pistons is not a common procedure. Most often the pistons are worn or the bores are bad and the labor involved does not justify re-using pistons. However it is good to see that an experienced critical eye like your own can make good use of these parts.

Joe,
Those pistons probably saved my car.  I had pretty much maxed out my credit card getting the parts of the car that were missing when I bought it that finding out the engine was so stuck I had to destroy the pistons to get them out was really a depressing day.

We tend to forget that all pistons are used after the first revolution.

Still have the flywheel hanging on the shop wall waiting for that Auto to 5 speed Getrag swap.
