« on: April 05, 2016, 01:08:03 »
I have located 5sp gearbox in Germany. Wondering if it will fit my 230sl? Do I need and special parts or any modifications? What is the diff between this gearbox and the ZF 5sp?

Well, for one thing it' side shifting and 113's are top shift. I'm not sure if a **** box would even work or not. Maybe someone can answer that question.

How's this gearbox compared to ZF?

side shift transmissions won't fit in the Pagoda tunnel. Hatch and Sons had to modify the tunnel to fit the 4 speed side shift transmission behind one of their 3.5 conversions.

Can you elaborate more? I'm not mechanic, what do you mean by side shift? I have my local mechanic look at the gearbox and he said that I should fit with some alteration to drive shaft. I'm not sure he know that he is talking about and need 2nd opinion.

If you look at your picture you will see 3 linkages with eyelets on the left side. These are the shifter linkages. The standard 113 transmission has its linkage on the top of the transmission. This transmission will not fit into the transmission tunnel opening with this side shift setup. The transmission mount will be too far back as well. With enough work, anything can be made to fit but in this case you would be cutting and welding the body to do so. Not worth it. A Getrag or T-5 conversion would be more cost effective.
