cupholder
« on: March 08, 2016, 04:34:36 »
I found a cupholder which may or may not work for our cars.  Since my car has been gone now 22 months and counting I am unable to verify measurements.  I have attached a link to the cupholder and would appreciate your input and comments.  Will it work or should I keep looking?

Thanks

Hi Hauser,
Your post has been up for a few weeks and the reluctance of members to comment should give you an idea of the general concensus.
My car is not with me at the moment and therefor cant really give you measurements. However, I think you should take another look at the dimensions of the cup holder. According to the picture, it is nearly a foot square and I really dont know where you were hoping to install it. There is no space between the seats.
Good luck.

Our basic problem is that Europeans, Germans in particular, don't drink anything on the fly.  They stop at an autobahn service area and sip a demitasse in a civilized fashion.  As I recall, my first Euro car that came with a cupholder was a 98 328i; it would hold a tall bold but a Slurpee was out of the question.   The answer, IMHO, is the narrower one that fits between the seats (after the wooden box is removed and carefully stored).  Or not.  Jon

But they sure did smoke on the fly. Have you noticed the cigarette lighter is the easiest accessory to reach in the whole car? You need to reach around the steering wheel to turn on the headlights!

I added two fold down type cup holders to my center console. Used existing screws and just drilled a hole in the bottom of the cup holder works like a charm.
Used holder like these.

Anyone interested in a cup holder that fits inside the tray have a look at this thread. http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=17029.msg118541#msg118541  I believe David was the first one, or maybe Michael, to recommend them.  I installed them in my car and they work great.  I used a false bottom for the tray, wrapped in the correct vinyl, so I can remove it if necessary at a show.

Yes, I bought a pair of them, and installed them similar to the photos. The two screws (I don't know if they are original but that's what I have) that hold the tray to the tunnel are used to hold the cup holders in place. I screwed right through the carpet, used the same holes in the tray and tunnel. Very easy install, nice look--and for the naysayers out there they also hold cell phones, sunglasses and other items...which is why I installed two.

Those are the same type of cup holders used by Volkswagen in the Vanagon and Eurovan. In case someone has trouble finding them.

Not exactly, Tyler, though they look similar. The ones I have (and are referenced early in the thread) have their cup holding "ring" a full 360, not missing a piece at the leading edge. Also, note the rubber flap to hold the cup in place, which is absent in the photo you posted. Just slight differences, but clearly not the same.

Michael, The ones for the eurovan are more like Davids photo. Full circle. The ones I posted above are for a vanagon. The fingers are spring loaded to hold the cup instead of a rubber flap. Same Idea just different construction. Reason I posted the photo was for the different colors.

Tyler, the ones shown in your picture are, or were, also used in John Deere tractors.
