air filter housing installation

Hi
Has anyone got a picture of the correct way so seat and secure the air filter housing? It looks as though what I have may not be correct.
Thanks for any help ...

And sorry, I don't have the answer... but the same question for an Euro-spec 280SL.
I know ther setup I had when buying the car was incorrect but can't find the correct one, so if someone also has the information for a 280SL.
By the way, it'd be worth confirming ther are 3 different air filter as suggested by the Niemoller catalogue https://www.niemoeller.de/en/w113/w113/B042/090/
And also if LHD and RHD cars have the same.

The air filter on the right of the picture (12) is an oil bath filter specially ordered for dusty road conditions.

All other cars would have the filter with the paper element (1)

LHD and RHD cars use the same filter AFAIK.

Is your air filter 'oil bath' or 'paper element'?
I think the base locating rubbers are not the same...

I finally took out the air filter to show what my set up is... Feels wrong as it wobbles around a bit.

I have a 250 SL and the mounting bolt with the bit of surface rust, in the depression toward the fan is there. But my car does not have the hexagonal metal "pad", nor is there a depression for that "pad" buffer. There is a mounting point on the inner wall of the fender. See second post.

Here are a few shots to illustrate. This is the mounting in my 250 SL

I took advantage of your question to take a close look at mine, and ended up pulling it out to clean up around that area. It does get dirty.

After re-assembly it is rock solid. The are only the two attachment points as shown in the photos. Air cleaner 1 and Air cleaner 2 are the same point just different angles. It is attached to the inner fender well.

I took a quick look at the 230 SL parts book (C edition) and the 250 SL book. The air filter housing shown for the 230 SL is different from the 250 SL housing. There is a second rubber buffer on the 230 SL part, but it is not listed with a separate part number and appears to be a part of the housing itself?

Neither book shows the attachment hardware at the fender well. Although you can barely see the other mounting bracket for the 250 SL filter in the parts book.

One of the mounting studs is broken as noted by the red arrow.

Looks like mine is the same as yours ... I think ... so looks like it might be correct. Maybe it is supposed to have a bit of wobble in it as the engine will move around a fair bit when driving the car.

I don't think the air filter should move at all. Any engine wobble should be taken up by the flex hose from the air filter to the intake manifold.

I replaced all 3 mountings on mine.  The one that is causing your wobble is the broken one 280SE guy pointed out.  The mountings are still available and fairly cheep...

On my 280 there is an angle bracket that bolts to the inner fender. With that fastened it shouldn't move much.

In you second picture is this an attachment point, or is it like mine being more like a shock absorber with the rubber resting against the metal stop?

As Brad said, your mount is broken.  It bolts on either end and it appears on your photo that the rubber has broken away from the mounting bolt.  You can easily get a new mount from Mercedes Centre California.  Call or email to Tom Hansen thomas.hanson@mbusa.com who will give you a bit of a discount to our members and post it to you. It will be cheaper that way rather through a local MB dealer.
