Oil cooler water plumbing issue
« on: June 13, 2016, 06:23:46 »
I have acquired a 250sl and its oil cooler water circulation circuit has been plugged and does not circulate water.  On the passenger side, the water line that comes from the driver side down low, around the front of the engine has been plugged and does not join the water line higher on the passenger side.  Missing is a "y" shaped metal Tubing piece that joins into a rubber line leading to the water pump assembly.  I'm wondering if someone can post a photo or tell me which of the two rubber lines it should be plumbed to.  Or describe which should be used.   Also, where can I buy the Y tubing item and possibly some other ferrous metal water pluming lines that are not in great shape.

Tom In Seattle,

Welcome to sl113 forum and congratulations on your 250sl.   Some of the experts may be able to follow your descriptions on the hoses without  you providing a photo. For me, a photo would be help.  However since you mentioned the "Y" shape metal tube, I do know this part.   I think you want part number: 1142000384    I don't know if you can find it.  Best bet is probably to call/email the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine California (Tom Hanson).   He will help.

For routing, the site below will help.  There is some cross over from 250sl to 280sl if your car is a late 250sl.  And their might be some cross over from 230sl to 250sl if your car is an early 250sl.

here is the link to SLS: http://www.sls-hh-shop.de/en/230-280SL-W113/50-Cooling-System/50-c-Cooling-System-280SL/?_artperpage=10&listorderby=oxstock&listorder=desc

The link is for 280, but the "y" is shown here and not shown on the 250 link.  I know that "Y" exists on my 250 (later) so look at this link and you will find the 250 link once on the site.

good luck.

Tom,  Here is a photo of the Y pipe on my 67 250sl. The smaller of the "Y" points down and gets connected with hose to the metal line that runs under the front of the car to the "Heat Exchanger". The 2 larger ends go to the upper metal tube on the fender well and the water pump housing respectively via rubber hose. You might want to test to make sure the Heat Exchanger wasn't bypassed because of an internal leak. If so you will have coolant and oil mixing...not good.
