Baseline for injection pump idle-thumb screw?
« on: June 20, 2016, 21:33:36 »
This is my first time working with Bosch injection in a while but I'm comfortable with just about every carb made since WWI and tuning electronic fuel injection so this isn't my first rodeo. I'm working through a '67 230SL that was restored then sat for some amount of time; it's got fresh fuel, I cleaned the CSV and it seems to be working. I set the injection pump linkage rod to 233mm then backed off the linkage until the throttle plate was just closed.

This leaves me with a couple of questions:
1) Is there a baseline for the injection pump idle thumb screw? For instance can I turn it in all the way then out 4 turns or the like? I am turning the screw (with the engine off) and getting very minor changes per half turn but I can push the screw in almost like its way too far out and just held in by a spring?
2) The car will not hot start worth a damn; it cranks strong, hits then drops down to 2-300 rpm and recovers most of the time but if I let it sit it'll just crank endlessly until I go to 1/2 or more throttle and it'll start and run.

I did pull apart the WSD and heated then cooled the plunger, it seems to be working. Is there something else I'm missing?

James, There really is no baseline per se. Make sure you are pushing in on the thumb screw before trying to turn it. The spring is there to keep the thumbscrew out of the way of moving parts while the engine is running. The inside of the thumbscrew looks like a flat bladed screwdriver and is what indexes with the actual adjustment screw inside the pump. So you will feel it index when it is in the proper orientation. You should feel detents while pushing and turning. There are usually 6 detents per 1 full revolution of the thumbscrew.

Have a look at the injection pump section of the manual and Have a look at these 2 threads currently about these topics.

You answered my question PERFECTLY; I wasn't pushing in on the thumbscrew when I turned it so nothing was happening! Thank you for your time, I appreciate it.
