Yes I have heard of top coating the single stage with clear.  Both Eastwood single stage can be top coated and so can the single stage from restoration shop.   I do not plan to top coat mine as from my last paint job in single stage black it buffed to a flawless shine so dont see the need for it for appearance but maybe for added UV protection it might be good.

So I have spent last two days emoving as much of the wiring harness and other odds and ends like the brake booster and relays and pretty much any thing in the way of the engine bay as I am going to paint the bay in the original Ivory DB 670. Ive removed a lot of the horrible black paint someone used. Its been a lot of work. I have a question about about what colour should the Battery tray be when looking at it from the front of the car. This is the vertical part of it that you can see through the grill of the car. If I paint that part of it Ivory I think it might look silly when the car is viewed from the front. It will look like a white patch in the grill?  should this be black or body colour?

Anything you see looking at the front of the car should be black/very dark grey. On original cars, the sides of the grill opening, were painted with what looks like brush strokes! You are accurate in your comment that body color would look rather odd.

These areas were brush painted by hand by workers on the assembly line in Sindelfingen. I add a picture below.
True also for some other areas, like around the air outlet louvers and the speaker, below the windshield (area then covered by wood strips and speaker grille).

That part is all semi-matte underhood black, just like the plate in the bottom and the square frame on top.

True, yet I've seen original cars without blacked out grills.

Painted engine and cleaned up wiring harness etc. this pic is of the left side of the car. there is a ground wire (brown),  it was routed around the silver thing, this seems a long way round to get to the ground bolt. Is this correct? this is on the side by the overflow radiator tank would go.

Attached is a photo from my 250 SL. There is no larger brown ground wire around the voltage regulator (silver thing). As you continue the great effort, the voltage regulator should have yellow electrical tape around the bottom of the can.

Ok. I basically pushed the wire back into the firewall and found a shorter route.  Thats interesting about the tape. Mine originally had a small peice of clear tape at the bottom. It wasnt yellow. Not sure if this is a difference between a 280SL and 250 SL.

On my 230SL the regulator has a black tape.

So the plot thickens.   Well today My brother and I just bought another 280SL (1969).   Just had it trailer ed this morning from New Rochelle NY to NJ.  Ill take a look at it and see if there is any tape, This car has been sittting around for many years untouched. But if there is anyone with an original 280SL who may know for sure what coloured tape that would be a big help to me. thanks.

It's yellow tape. On the much smaller and newer style electronic voltage regulators there is no tape. This tape is there to help seal moisture out of the box which will come apart once the tape is removed.

I am not aware that I am color blind but my 230SL's regulator has a black tape, always had.
Perhaps this a 280SL feature?

A brand new, OEM voltage regulator for my 280SL in the Bosch box, has NO tape whatsoever.

Just like Mike S., my new Bosch Voltage Regulator doesn't have any tape, but the original one has tape.

Ok Ill go get some yellow electrical tape. Sounds like the consensus is that Yellow tape is the way to go. Im assuming if its to keep moisture out it needs to be wrapped around all of the bottom of it.

Found a NOS unit in the box. Same part number but has green tape, "Germany" marking stamped. The one with yellow tape has
"Ind Brazil Para" stamped. So do I use the one made in Brazil with the "correct" color yellow tape, Or the one made in Germany with the green tape.  :-\
