A/C Compressor Removal

I want to remove the A/C Compressor on my 1966 230SL as part of an A/C upgrade (Sanden probably).  I thought before I jumped in, I'd poll the folks here who have done this.  Does the alternator have to come out so the old compressor can be removed from above or is the compressor removed from below.  Do you remove the compressor from the bracket then remove the bracket or bring them out as a unit?  Lastly, if from above, I expect the heater coolant hose has to be removed as well?  (Drat.)
