Brake Compensator Adjustment
« on: January 24, 2022, 21:10:42 »
Here is an article posted by a defunct website called Oldtimers regarding the compensator.  They built a device to check and adjust it.  I am in the process of making one also.

When I had my compensator apart there was some corrosion in the bore and it probably does not work correctly.  I think I will bore it out and put a brass sleeve in and readjust it.

If I get the device built I will check others if anyone wants.

You can send it off to be rebuilt, tested and restored. PMB performance. I can't remember the price, but wasn't that much and several have used them on this site. Or you can build a testing fixture you will use once. If you have the time to do so, that can be fun also. Just depends on your situation.

Not sure what the cost is to rebuild/restore but you can get them new.  Here is one from Alfa Romeo. I don't know how the cost compares to MB.

I don’t mind trying to fix it but if I screw it up I’ll now know where to find a new one. Thank you.

Keep in mind the Alfa unit is tuned for an Alfa.  They are most likely exactly the same unit but with a different setting. You "could" swap the spring and housing with the adjustment screw and retain the adjustment.  I do often wonder if we could eliminate some of the nose dive by using a different adjustment?

I kind of thought that the brake force regulator only acts on the rear disc brakes. It keeps the rear brakes from locking up in heavy braking situations which is a sure way to end upside down in the Pumpkin patch if they ever do.  :( :-[

You might be thinking about a brake bias regulator which is a different device.

Maybe I called it the wrong name but it’s what you are talking about, reducing the pressure to the rear brakes.

No, you had it right. Just wanted you to understand that these are two different devices.
