Aftermarket Headrests
« on: November 14, 2004, 17:04:56 »
I don't like the idea of riding in my 230 SL without headrests.  I have looked for headrests several times on the internet without success.  Today, I found a Japanese Company called "Carmate" that claims to have after market headrests. I can not seem to get their website.  Does anyone know anything about this company?

Thank you,
Rupert

Have you considered using MB sedan headrests? Lot's of donor cars to be found and though it would require some welding to mount the tubes that the rests slide in, it shouldn't be too hard to get a good looking result, as the seats usually have a plastic collar that fits to the top of the tubes and would cover the holes through the tex/leather. I have a set from a 280se that I considered using on my 250sl, that I'd be glad to pass on, though I haven't removed the tubes from the donor seats and the rests are covered in blue fabric so would need to be recovered to match your interior.

PS Anyone know if the correct type SL rests were also used on sedans or do they just look close?

Hello !

The headrests for W 113 are still available
at Mercedes (in Germany).

Part No: 113 970 07 50 (uncovered headrest)

I posted a pic of the sticks inside the
backrest few days ago. Easy to install.

If You have an early 230 SL (smaller seats !)
I wouldn`t go for the W 113 headrests, be-
cause they`re too large.

Use the ones from W 123 or W 115 and have
them orginal "W113" covered ! Looks much
better and no one will see that it`s not
original.

Good Luck !

Tom

Right now there are a few headrest pairs on Ebay.  I am sure that these do not include the necessary hardware inside the seat back it self.  New covers can be bought at any of the suppliers of seat material if none of the current one match your seats.

I installed headrests from a 108 that I found in a junk yard in my 66 230SL. I pulled all the hardware and trim out of the 108 seat back and upholstery and transferred it to my 230 SL seats. This was quite some time ago and I recall having to measure a bit to make sure everything lined up correctly but it did and they adjust and support as if factory installed. It would take another Benz nut to discern this from a factory installation. I've been happy with it for years.

The one thing I found that differs in MB headrests is that the type used in the Pagoda has a slight slant on the bottom portion of the head rest.  All the others seem to be flat bottom.
