Bosch Fuel injection

Hi All,

Does Bosch make a new mechanical fuel injection pump for my 280sl? or can anyone recommend someone that does rebuilds/overhauls.

im in Australia, but happy to send it away.

Its very hard to get a straight answer from mechanics in Australia, they seem reluctant to do it, suggest it and have done everything else to try to stop my rough idle. I have had the car for 14 years now and i know when its not running right.

Take it to an old crusty diesel mechanic.  It is more up their alley.

 I would start from the beginning.  Compression,  Valve lash.  ignition timing, Vacuum leaks then start looking at the injection pump.  Then disconnect each plug wire at the distributor and see if they all cause the engine to slow down(RPM drop test)  then do the same with the injectors by loosening the fuel lines at the injection pump.

Assuming everything else has been checked a stated by Shvegel, You may want to perform a cylinder leak down test. Burnt valves dont always show up on a compression test and can cause a rough idle

A diesel pump is like a diesel engine - similar to a 113 engine but not the same. Most diesel rebuilders won't even talk to you about doing gas pumps. If you find a place that will do it, and do it correctly, you're lucky.

Hi everyone! it seems i have more or less the same problem, I cleaned my injectiors in a bosch store and the car is going almost perfectly, the only thing is that the car suffer a lot to go over 4000 rpm so the power is not anymore as it was. The difficult thing is to find a competent person which is able to put hands in this fuel injection pump, in Italy is very difficult. Do you have some advice?  Apart from this the bosch store adviced me to put in the fuel tank every 2 months an additive from bardahl which keeps the injectors cleaned, do you think is a good decision?

Mauro - are you sure the problem is caused by tHe FI pump? Because most of the time syptoms like yours are the result of some other issue. You could check with Porsche enthusiasts of the same period for a reliable address near you, as I understand it very similar Bosch pumps were used in their cars.

This sounds to me like a fuel supply or ignition problem rather than a fuel pump problem.  Any mechanic should be able to check the following.

Fuel supply

Do a volume check.  Disconnect the fuel return hose and attach a hose leading into a container.  Turn the ignition on for 15 seconds and check the amount of fuel delivered.  It should be at least one liter.

Ignition

Check that ignition points are in good condition, that gap is set to .3 mm, that dwell is 40 degrees.
Check ignition timing is close to top dead center at idle speed.
Check that spark plugs are not fouled and are gapped at .8 mm.
Check or simply replace the coil.

Thank you for your advices! it shoud be kind of work for a normal mechanic. For sure the mixture is a bit too rich also. It is a pity because i have the zf 5 speed gearbox and its a pleasure to change gear in high rpm range but i prefer not to do because im scared to make damage if something is not checked properly.
