special tool for B nuts

Hello All,

I made this crows-foot tool for the fuel line B nuts.
 
I welded a cut off flare nut wrench onto a SAE crowsfoot.  Then I tapped that for a set screw to secure it onto the extension,
then cut off the SAE wrench yoke.

I have a 14 and a 17mm for setting the valve clearance. I got them off the shelf many years ago.

When I installed my 09 camshaft I had to adjust the valve clearance by about 1 mm because the base circle of the camshaft is so much smaller. I removed the rocker arms and used a 17 mm socket wrench to screw  out the ball studs. After assembly there was only a little adjustment necessary  and the threaded fit was not so tight any more. My ancient 17 mm valve adjustment wrench seemed to work better  than the newer one. Even though I re-installed each rocker arm on the stud it came from, I expect some wearing in and most likely have to do some more adjusting. Some of these ball studs  turn really hard and it takes a sturdy wrench or you have to pull the rocker arm to use a socket. The tread has a pitch of 1.5 mm and it is a 2 to 1 ratio to valve lash.

Engineer, not 100% sure , but some ballstuds might go all the way trough into the coolingarea and so can get really tight..

Did you use the thicker shims on top of the valves to compensate for the  smaller basecircle ?

No - I did not use the thicker shims. That would have been a good thing to do, but I did not know about it. When I was young, I thought when I would get older, I would know much more. But it did not turn out that way.

I just noticed they are called thrustpieces instead of shims.

Somewhere in Mb literature there seems to be a decription to be found on how rockers should travel sideways over these thrustpieces , in order to avoid excessive radial forces on the valve stems.
