1983 Euro 280SL cylinder head removal
« on: March 09, 2017, 14:43:26 »
I need some help on removing my cylinder head. All the attachments are detached and I'm down to the timing chain tensioner and I'm not exactly sure what my next step should be. Any advice,  suggestions  is highly appreciable. The car is a euro 280SL 1983 V-6 double overhead cam.

Sounds like you have a 107 280SL?  While it is a twin cam engine, it's an inline six. Look inside the chain case for any smaller head screws that you may have missed.

I would recommend purchasing a 110 engine manual to provide many of the details unique to this engine and also for torque specs, tensioner removal and installation etc. The cam housing needs to be removed prior to the actual cylinder head also.

I've done it without removing the can housing ( I think ) but it's been many years since I worked on one. A 113 engine is easy by comparison.

Yes you will definitely need to read-up on re-setting and installing the chain tensioner.

You guys are awesome! I did order the service manual through emanualonline. It took forever to download 7,000+pgs. with no contents pg. The tentioner and timming chain worries me. Don't want to mess with the chain. Thanks!
