Rear Hard Top Latch
« on: April 22, 2017, 19:48:20 »
Did a search but didn't find the answer so here goes.

I am replacing the pin and plastic parts of my rear hard top latches.  The replacement pin at the bottom has one sleeve secure on one end and the other sleeve pulls off so it can be installed.  Once the pin is in place through the handle and cap and the loose sleeve is slid into place, how does one keep the sleeve from coming off?  Glue it, tap it with a hammer so it mushrooms a bit, or something else?  Thanks.

Hi Marcus,
from whom did you buy the replacement parts?
If you bought the pin and sleeves from Memmo (a member here) then the loose one just screws on:

Hi Alfred, no, I bought them from Buds Benz as I needed the chrome cover as well.  The sleeve does not screw on.

Hi Marcus,
you should call Buds and ask how to fix the sleeve in place. You would not want to have it turn on the pin and perhaps come off eventually just when you want to take the top of and turn the handle. I remember a post here where this happened and it took the owner a lot of effort and time to get it unstuck.

Just thought I would follow up after talking to Buds in case anyone else purchases these.  Buds says to just use a hammer and dolly to flare out the one end with the loose sleeve.  It should flare pretty easily as the centre of the pin has been partially drilled on the one end.

And a BTW, the two handles are NOT interchangeable so make sure you mark which side each comes from when you remove them.  I didn't and it was by chance I came across one of Alfred's great photos while doing a search that showed the orientation of the hole relative to the handle.  So another save by Alfred.  Thankfully I had not yet put everything back together.
