280 SE/NV engine

Good day,

I have a 1964 230 SL  where the engine has been replaced with a 280SE/NV from probably a W111.
Can anyone tell me what the background of this engine type is and why it has a lower compression?

The engine type is indicated by the number after "130" on the engine ID plate and/or punched into the engine block. In your case perhaps 130.981 or 130.984(?)
Compression on such a low compression M130 NV is 8 to 10 kg/cm2 at running temp; minimum is 6,5 kg/cm2.      Nominal compression is 7,8:1.
 A normal M130.983 engine as mounted in a 280SL /8 Pagoda has 10-12 kg/cm2 at running temp; min is 8,5 kg/cm2.   Nominal compression is 9,5:1.

A lower compression engine can be run on lower grade fuel

280SE/NV   is the designation of the head, the actual enginenumber is stamped in the casting  of your engineblock.

Hans you are right the engine number is probably  130.984.10.000478 ( as far as i can decipher it)

Can you confirm from which model the  engine comes from?
Was the engine developed for a specific region  as it can handle lower grade fuel ? And if that is the case  for what reason?

From memory it's from a 280 sedan, the data should be in the tech manual. I suppose you could replace the head with a standard, higher compression one if you want to go that route.
