When we bought our 69 280SL 2 weeks before PUB a lot of parts were just tossed in the car including the wood. One of the dash wood pieces was snapped in two, and whoever previously painted the car thought it was a good idea to paint the wood to match. After we stripped the wood we discovered they painted the wood white to cover up their mistakes! It looks like someone took a power sander to the wood and destroyed it. We were able to to repair the broken piece so it is unnoticeable from the finished side, and refinished the wood.
Even though the wood turned out great and would be satisfactory to most people, we felt that we could do better. While at PUB we purchased a second set of wood that had a few spots that were sanded through the veneer. But overall was in good condition, and was a much better starting point than our first set. We then took that set and refinished it.
