Have any one seen a side mirror mounted like this?
« on: August 06, 2017, 02:00:56 »
Hello everyone

My car an early 230sl 1963 has the side mirror mounted like a Brit his sport car. In the front of the left fender. Is it possible that it was installed like that at the factory?  I will not know if there are holes in the door intel I prepare th car for the new paint job

Have anyone seen something like this?

I do not think it came that way from M-B factory. Your mirror was most likely installed in this position by the country dealership or by some previous owner (PO)

it is possible the car was originally sold in Japan?  By law cars sold into Japan at that time had to have the mirrors viewable through the windshield.

"For a crash course in the history of rear-view mirrors in Japan, I contacted the Japan Automotive Manufacturers Association and spoke to Ryuji Osuga in the technical division. Osuga explained that fender mirrors were standard equipment on passenger cars in Japan until 1983, when the law was liberalized to allow for door mirrors as well. Door mirrors had become the norm in the Western market, and foreign car-makers argued that Japan’s refusal to recognize side-door mirrors amounted to a non-tariff trade barrier."  The Japan Times

My 1961 220Sb had the mirror on the fender in the same position.  It was definitely original on the sedan.

These were original mirrors on Mercedes sedans of the era. Not sure if the early Pagodas were ever delivered with these or they were added by others afterward.

I believe they were delivered without mirrors. You can find this mirror often when delivered to france or to switzerland. They were taken there by the dealer. The pagoda of my friend for example is the most original I know with 100000km and delivery switzerland. I know this only at 230sl and 250sl.
