Alternator replacement suggestions
« on: April 20, 2015, 21:07:01 »
My alternator is not producing the minimum voltage so its time to replace it. My car is a 1968 280sl currently with a 35 Amp "Remy 13014" alternator. I read in past posts where some owners upgraded to 55 Amp alternators. I do not have AC now, but hope to some day. The alternator that AutohausAZ sells for my car is a rebuilt 35 amp Bosch (AL64x) for $75 while BudsBenz sells a 55 Amp B208-015m for $150 (does not name manufacturer)

Any suggestions or past experience with these? I like the idea of the higher amps, but I really don't want to start changing other parts to accommodate it.

Thanks
John

Hi John,

I just checked Rock Auto, where I bought my rebuilt one for a good price.  They are out of stock apparently.  Then I googled AL74X (X means rebuilt), and found several places in the U.S. that sell them rebuilt.  Summit Racing has them for $86.97 plus a $5 core charge.  AutohausAZ wants $85.50 plus $8 core charge.

Google (or similar are your best friends).

I can tell you where to get the connectors and how to wire it.

Good Luck.

I used the Bosch AL 72X on my '71 which is 55amps and is direct plug and play, same housing and connectors and external regulator. I believe the 74X has internal regulator and requires wiring adaptors.

The 55 amp AL74X can be either internal or external regulator.  Mine is external.  I replaced my fender-mounted original regulator with a more modern 280SL regulator that looks the same as the 230SL regulator.  I wanted the car to look pretty close to original.

The connectors on the AL74X are completely different than the original 35 amp alternator (which had no connectors originally, although the newer 35 amp alternator does have connectors, apparently).  Although the connectors on the AL74X are different than the old 35 amp alternator, the "CONNECTIONS" are the same - DF, D-, D+, B+ and Ground (frame to mtg. bracket).  It's just necessary to re-terminate the wires with two new connectors.

I don't remember how to rewire the harness for an internal regulator alternator.  I would have to study it again.

I also bought an alternator from Advanced Auto for 67 230SL, it has the original fittings.

Hi,

How difficult is it to replace the alternator? Do you know of any good link that tells you how to do it?

Cheers

Hello,

Does anyone know how to replace the alternator on a 250sl 1967? Any links and videos would be very helpful.

Cheers
