Cold start valve leaking - query
« on: September 10, 2017, 08:31:09 »
Hi All - took the 230sl out for a spring drive. It was great  ;D

The downside it was pointed out to me that the CSV was leaking fuel from the Bakelite top. Looking at the Tech Manual I read the following -

"Leaking Valve (External)

In this case the seal on the solenoid shaft fails, and fuel can pass trough the body of the solenoid and out the top.

You will have to replace the seal on the shaft of the solenoid.

You might try the usual suppliers or an MB dealer for the o-ring; it might be fairly expensive and it is an odd size not commonly available. I had no luck getting the part, so used a small “o” ring sourced from a bearing supply company, and modified a small brass washer to hold it in place. This process is described in Repair of the CSV and appears to work fine."

My question is this. The CSV appears to be a sealed unit with the seal on the inside. Is the proposed solution to add an additional 'O' ring to the shaft on the outside of the sealed unit - or to get into the unit and change it there. Stupid question but the price they are a fix is worth looking at.

Hi Richard,
I had the same problem and it seems to be quite common.  Firstly, you must stop the leaking valve. Try lapping it with toothpaste with very light pressure. Grinding paste is too course.
I managed to find two small O rings from a local bearing shop. Measure the shaft and go half mm smaller, iirc 3mm. Slip them on the end of the solenoid shaft with a little rubber grease between the O rings and the solenoid body. When the solenoid is not powered and the shaft retracted the O rings should 'butt up' nicely to the solenoid.
In our climates, the solenoid should only be powered for a few seconds. I drove around for a few days with the solenoid unpowered in order to confirm the valve had stopped leaking.

Thanks Chris

I have done exactly as described and seems to be a good solution!  ;D

Cheers
Richard
