Speaker Grille Screws - a good number
« on: November 11, 2017, 15:16:49 »
Sorting out a 280SL after restoration, and one task was to re-fasten the speaker grille.  The problem was that the dash had been re-covered with a MB Tex-like product that was thicker than the original, so the original 19 mm screws were too short.  Hmm.  Not all that easy to find long-ish 2.9 mm chrome sheet metal screws.  After some searching, I was able to find and order PN N007983-02218, 2.9x25 mm chrome screws.  The only issue is that they are Philips head.  Slotted head screws don't seem to be available in that size.

An alternative is  #4 stainless steel SM screws in a 1" length, but they are hard to find as well.

Cheers,

The original screws on my 250 were Philips. Unless somthing changed Im not sure why MB would revert to slotted in that location.

Dunno.

The screws on this car were missing.  But the screws that came out of my 280SL were 2.9 x 19 slotted.  I did a test fit and they were too short, which led me to search for longer ones.  All I could find that were still available were in the DIN 07983, which is Philips.

The EPC doesn't call out the speaker grille screws, but they do show two 007982 002222, which are not in the "Schuessel Liste fuer DIN und Normteile" that I have.

I think that the 16 mm screws at Authentic will be too short.

Ya made me look. The grill screws on my 280 SL (VIN 12730) are phillips head, and I believe they are original ones.

Chuck,
the 230SL and 280SL spare parts list show a p/n 007983 002232.
Unfortunately that one is also not in the "Schlüsselliste" that I have. However, Dave Gallon told me once that it is a DIN7983 2.9 x 25mm Philips screw and I bought two stainless from him.

If you must have chrome then: https://www.ebay.com/itm/8x-Chromschrauben-NEU-2-9-x-25-DIN-7983-/362097376492?hash=item544eaf7cec

Danke, Alfred.

I can't find 2232 either.  That's a great price - MB charged me $5 and change apiece.

Those long chrome phillips screws are about 1" or 25mm long and are the same as used for the wood trim around the doors of the W108/W109 sedans(bottom rear on front doors or bottom fronts on rear doors) the rest of the wood screws are too short.
Need a pair Chuck?
Let me know, I have a few.
