230 SL Engine Will Not Run Below 2000rpm.
« on: October 07, 2017, 22:26:16 »
1964 MB 230SL engine will start and rev up but when I lighten my foot off the gas, as soon as the RPMs get below 2000, the engine dies. Here is the rest of the story.  About a year ago after not running the car for a while, it would not start. I noticed that the gas in the tank was murky with rust. Pulled out the tank and eventually decided to replace the tank. Did that but the engine still would not start. Checked the injector pump and it was not pumping much. Sent the pump to Gus at Pacific Fuel Injection and he rebuilt the pump. Got the pump back, installed it and the engine started but would not stay running below 2000 RPM. Took the pump out and sent back to Gus. He check and said it performed perfectly on his test machine. o, I have replaced the fuel tank, the fuel filter many times, put in new injectors, spark plugs and the fuel pump even but still have the problem. Hope someone may be able to provide some insight and possibly solutions. Oh...the engine oil is starting to smell of gasoline. Also, I thought it might be the cold start valve but I blocked off the fuel line to it but the problem continued. :(

Try the linkage tour first, then check the fuel pressure and volume from the electric fuel pump.

Checked the linkage and all looks and feels good. Fuel pressure at injector pump is right around 10psi. Volume good too.Filled my container in about 10 seconds.

Took the car to Pierre, thank you for the recommendation. He is terrific and very knowledgable for sure. Pointed me to Jerry Fairchild Assoc. in California for pump work. Think they may have discovered the problem...low speed mixture too lean. It's not the idle mix but something internal. Pump is on its way back. Will post the results. They did say that I should be looking for an additional pump as the pistons in mine are worn and parts do not exist.

Do let me know if/when you do. I believe the part number I am looking for is PES6KL70/120R11 and perhaps the R12 might fit as well.

Hello All - Got my R11 230Sl fuel injection pump back from Jerry Fairchild Industries. They were able to adjust the the pump to provide more fuel in the mid range and thus get my engine to run below 2000 RPM. It was adjusted to lean by another company that had worked on the pump. Engine runs pretty darn good  now but I still need to fiddle with the idle some. It's still not smooth but so much better than it was. The car runs now. Yippie!
Still looking for a spare injector pump so I can get some pistons out of it. So, if you hear of one for sale, let me know.
