Coco strands seat pads ? Worth it ?
« on: January 26, 2018, 17:50:01 »
Hi,
My 230 is having some "cosmetic and comfort " restorations at MB Classic center in Portugal.
The seats are pretty uncomfortable, very soft, with loss of interior material (horse hair (?) falling on the carpet every time the seats are used.
The suggestion from the center has been coco strands cushions. They cost 250€ for each seat bottom and 530€ for each back rest. Total 1560€.
Seems very expensive compared to foam type pads seen on the usual supplier sites in Europe which can be about 600 for all 4. Any opinion on being worth the difference ?
I would ask the same about the MB rubber seals.
Regards
Pedro

A few years ago I installed a MB Tex kit over my original horse hair pads. The seats looked ok except for a few wrinkles where the horse hair deteriorated. The new seats looked a little "deflated". Now, plans have changed. Switching to leather and chose to go with the new foam. New cars use foam and I expect the foam should hold its shape better over time. However, the foam replacements have not been on the market long enough to form an opinion. The pads I bought came from a German supplier. After opening the shipment, I found one piece that needed replacement because the foam injection came up a little shy on one side. They sent another no questions asked.

Keep in mind, there are slight differences in the seat cushions between earlier and later cars. I think the foam replacements are only for the later style seats. They will fit the earlier seat frames but I am not sure you would want to go that route if you have already invested in your upholstery.

Thank you Frank.

My seats are 1966 and seems they are the same as the latter models. I have seen earlier 230s seem to have clearly thinner back rests.

I believe the back rests are the same on all cars. The seat cushion has a contour along the edge at the door side on later cars and earlier cars are straight.

The back rests have changed quite a bit during the 230SL production years. See Achim Ahlert's article in Pagoda World issue 18, 2016
