Auto Transmission Tube

About to do a transmission service on my 1966 230SL.

I understand from reading earlier post that I should hold the 24mm nut on the pan in place while I back off the 27mm nut fitting. Is this the correct procedure?

Also, I understand that there are aluminum seals under the tube's fittings. Can anyone tell me what the size of those seals are? I don't know if I have them in my parts inventory and might need to order before taking things apart.

You need a aluminium (non-reusable) or copper (sometimes reusable) seal for the oil pan drain plug (14x18mm*) and a copper seal for the torque converter drain plug (10x13mm*). There is no seal underneath the cone-shaped tube fitting (hollow line for oil dipstick - oil filler pipe) but 2 copper seals (12x16mm*) at the hollow line to the oil cooler.

Hi WRe,

Thank you for your response and information. So I take it that the fill tube that goes into the trans oil pan has no gasket? My vehicle being older does not have an oil cooler. I assume you just need to hold the inner nut on the funnel while you turn off the outer nut? This will separate the trans oil pan from the fill tube?

Hi Tom,
afaik all 6 cyl. engines at this time with an automatic gearbox had an gear oil cooler. It's attached underneath the radiator and connected to the transmission by a feed and return line. Don't mix it with the motor oil cooler.
If you want to do an oil change w/o a filter change - means w/o removing the oil pan - it's not necessary to loosen the union screw of the oil filler pipe. Nevertheless there is no seal underneath because it's a cone-shaped tube fitting. And don't forget the oil from the clutch/torque converter.

I don't know why I was thinking "oil cooler" as in motor oil. Of course the line is to the auto trans oil cooler under the radiator.
