Instrument Cluster Connection Plate
« on: March 13, 2018, 20:20:17 »
I am looking for an Instrument Cluster Connection Plate for my 1970 280SL.  Part # 000 542 13 78.  My rheostat is not working.

I found one on ebay, but I was hoping someone here had one.  Thanks

The rheostat has recently become available again from MB. It's pricey.  Most members do the simple by-pass procedure which will leave the dash lights on full bright when the lights are on. The rheostat can be taken apart and repaired as long as the coil is not broken. To fix epoxy the coil back in it's bed, clean the contacts and coil rubbing surface.

Joe, I found one on EBAY,NOS still in the box.  I want it to work correctly.  I think I'm going to bite the bullet and replace the whole Connection Plate.   Unless someone has one they would like to part with....  ::)

You better get some assurance that the rheostat still works!

You could buy the complete cluster for about twice the price: https://www.ebay.de/itm/MERCEDES-W111-W113-PAGODE-KOMBIINSTRUMENT/173210780486

Either eBay option you may still need to repair or replace the rheostat (potentiometer).

Bill, if you are to buy the whole cluster, check the fuel gauge, or at least do not fit it in the car without checking if you have the same (late in your case) type of fuel gauge. Otherwise, in case the cluster comes with older gauge version, you would have to either:
1. Accept the gauge does not work
2. Remove the cluster again to swap the gauges
3. Chnage the sender to the older type, which you do not want to do

Bill,
instead of paying $650 (plus taking a chance that the pot has not corroded over time) I'd repair it following the instructions in the technical manual.
My $0.02 (-$650) 😀 !
