Headrests
« on: January 13, 2005, 13:24:15 »
Hello all,
I have non original (MB ?) headrests on my car with legs which are 20 centimeters apart (instead of 15 cm). A bar with two tubes is welded on the seat frame to put the headrests in. Plastic grommets go through the leather.
I want to screw the original rails to the seat frames and I have found secondhand navy blue headrests on Ebay.
I have now a problem with the holes in the leather which are 20 centimeters apart.. How could I close them?
I have seen headrests which have a hole at the base of the lateral sides and others which have not. Which is the purpose of this holes? Are the headrests different on american and european cars or through the years?
Thanks. Alain, 280 SL euro.

Alain;
I also got some headreast off e-bay simular with out the gromett in the center of the headrest side. I think the purpose of this is to tilt the headrest. I think the other standard ones are for a sedan.

The plastic grommets are access holes to tighten the tilting action of the head rest.  When I recovered mine I left these off as they tilted fine; and I know how to get into them if I needed to make these adjustments via the zipper in the bottom of the head rest..

You might want to contact these people by e-mail and ask them:
http://www.leatherique.com/
The company owners were at StarFest (National MBCA event) this year and they really know their leather care.  They could give you advise on patching, using their products of course!
