changing chain guides
« on: April 13, 2018, 17:25:44 »
Hi there,
I am in the process of doing an engine refit of my 230SL. I cannot figure out how to change the lower chain guides. The head is off and a plan to change the timing chain. The upper guides are not to good looking so I want to inspect and maybe change the lower ones. I cannot even see them and I cannot find directions how to remove them and install new ones. Can anyone help?

I think you would need to remove the oil pan to gain access to the chain rails. Once you remove the chain rail pins you might be able to remove them from the top with the head off but there will likely be things in the way during removal. You might have to remove the water pump and anything on the front of your engine if you are unable to see the chain rail pins. It's a lot easier with the engine removed but maybe you will able to figure it out.
