The mysterious unattached two wires
« on: October 31, 2018, 23:04:43 »
In following the Starting Aids Tour, I note my 1966 230 SL should have a time switch (which I believe should be cylindrical) next to the other starting system relays.  I note there are two unattached wires, but no time switch.  I've tried all the typical sources (Bud's, Eurocars, AutohausAZ, etc.) but haven't been able to locate this part.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

H Bob, The thermo time switch has probably been removed years ago
by other owners, and because the original examples are know longer available,
but can purchase newer ones.
For memory i think Buds Benz sells them.
But any way Bob if you live in Fresno , you will never require it in that enviroment .
If you have a problem with starting  it will be some other fuel or ignition problem,. regards.

The thermo time switch is on the engine. Your one second relay is the round relay shown in your picture. It looks like the two wires could have gone to a auxiliary fuse box since the end of the wires have no ring terminals on them. Are you having starting issues?

Bud's is sending me a new conical gasket for the cold start valve, as fuel was leaking past the base and not going into the intake manifold.  I was trying to test the warm running device, but couldn't figure out a test.  The plunger at the base of the WRD moves in and out, but how do you test the device itself?  I'm also unsure of how to test the injection starting solenoid other than feeling that it "clicks" once power is applied to the starter.  Any suggestions are most welcome!

For the WRD, air intake at the small round air filter should be basically closed after engine is at full operating temperature. For the injection pump solenoid check its function two ways. First let the engine start and idle. Use a jumper wire and activate the solenoid while the engine is running. The engine should over-richen and stall if the system is working. Next use a test light to make certain that the solenoid activates when the starter is activated.

Thanks Joe - that is most helpful.  David Latham advised that the two unconnected wires should have run to a "little junction block" that contained two fuses.  Not sure of their function on the output side, but I guess I don't need them now.
