WTB - Gray W113
« on: May 10, 2018, 21:39:01 »
I'm a private enthusiast wanting to purchase a 230 / 250 or 280 SL.  I particularly like the gray colour cars, needs to be an auto so my wife can drive it also.  Budget is around $70k.  I'm on the East Coast but happy to buy anywhere in CONUS.   Thanks in advance for any information

Would Silver DB180 work for you?

Thanks,
Walter

Thanks and agree.  While I am buying to the budget I have, I have found I really enjoy the journey of restoring cars, as much as I like owning and driving them.  I have a very well equipped large workshop and am comfortable and experienced with body work and mechanical work.  If I had a larger budget (which I don't), I think I wouldn't be as happy buying a car somebody else had restored.

If it was a really original car (they're only original once - right?) it would be a different story.  But I have nowhere near the budget required for that.....so needs must, and luckily I enjoy, and am capable of, the various aspects of restoration work.

You should be able to find a solid number 3 car for that price. Everything should work and you should be able to drive it away. Could be a nice rolling restoration where you can drive in the summer and fix stuff when it's off the road in the winter.

I like number 3 cars. Solid drivers that you don't need to worry about too much.

I agree.  And a solid driver condition 3 car would be fine by me.

Sooo - having looked at a range of cars described as 'rust free' with (undisclosed) rusty floor pans, priced from $40k to $80k, I have come to the conclusion that the same rule holds true in the Pagoda world as in all other parts of the classic car world - "when buying a car start with the least rusty one you can find"..I looked at an $80k car today - beautiful paint and interior, but rusty (perforated through) floor pans and sills.

I'm dropping my fixation on grey Pagoda's and am going to focus on finding a complete, tired but not too rusty Pagoda of any colour.  The rest I can sort for myself during the restoration process.  I'm happy to repair rust, but I'd prefer to buy a tired and original car, and know what I'm getting, rather than paying for flash paint jobs covering structural rust (such as the $80k car I viewed today).

Any leads appreciated on tired and original 230/250/280 SL's of any colour.
Thanks...

Still want an auto transmission.  I have a '67 250SL graphite grey exterior and red leather interior, however it is a 4 speed.
