Identification plate numbers....again...
« on: January 04, 2005, 09:43:51 »
Hope this will not frustrate anyone. At least it's a conversation piece...

I have read most of the forums here. Printed out over 2 inches thick of forum discussions!  That's the problem, I've read so much that I've forgotten a lot.  (I have also read all the other websites suggested)  Please help if you have some time.  Here are the numbers on my identification plate:

050G
113042 20 8
0019500073

I know that the 050 is white and G is for Glasurit
It doesn't look like there's a color for the hardtop but I got one with the car (in black). I still have not had the chance to check the number on the hardtop - it needs some serious cleaning!

113042 for 230SL
The 2 stands for right hand drive and the 0 for manual.

Anyone know what the 8 stands for?
The last line, I have no idea. Any help would be appreciated.

Eryck,

the lower line reads two numbers, the production number (00195 in your case) and the Aufbau-Nr. (assembly/construction/build number) which is 00073. You should be able to find this second number on some of your parts, for instance the upper left inner edge of the engine hood.

I am still confused what the "8" means. Experts opinions are controverse there.

For your data card request, ask at DaimlerChrysler in Stuttgart. S.o. else posted the address here. Send a proof of purchase/ownership (copy of title or equivalent) and be patient. It will take some time untill you'll get it from DC.

All the best,

The "8" stands for the sales market "Asia"

Klaus,

Hi.  People have been wondering what the digit on that line means for many years!  You're an incredible source of information, and we can't thank you enough.

Below is my data plate:

426 512 531
124g 158h 5
113042 12 5
6 00068 03486

My Data Card shows:
Prod Nr. (Production No.) = 00068
Aufbau Nr. (Assembly No.) = 03486
Auftrags Nr. (Order/Assignment No.) = 65432581

I would like to know what the "5" is at the end of line 2 on the data plate.

I would like to know what the "5" is at the end of line 3 on the data plate.  I would assume "Europe"?

I would like to know what the "6" is at the beginning of line 4 on the data plate.

Decoding Auftrags Nr.:
6 = ?
543 = Italy Destination/Dealer
2581 = ?

Many thanks, Klaus!  I hope to see you in Ohio again this July.  We'll be having a cookout at my house.

Thanks,

If you want to avoid the hassle of going through DB in Germany go to your local MB dealer, talk nicely to somebody with 1/2 a brain and they can get the info for you pretty quickly. I got a faxed copy of the card and a proper photcopy within a week from the dealer

Malc,
I've go the data card, and got a good description of all my option codes from MB Classic, but I'm looking for help with these single digit numbers on the data plate (inner fender).

Your car came with code 415, hardtop without softtop; the 5 is the last digit of this code.

<<I would like to know what the "5" is at the end of line 3 on the data plate. I would assume "Europe"?>>
5 is Europe except Germany. The others are:
2,3 Germany
4 Diplomats, NATO, Tourists except US-Tourists
6 Africa
7 America
8 Asia
9 Australia
(They also are the 2nd digit of the Auftrags-No.)

<<I would like to know what the "6" is at the beginning of line 4 on the data plate.>>
Presumably a production code identifying additional body work for certain versions or options. My car has a dash at this location.

<<Decoding Auftrags Nr.:
6 = ?>> Last digit of order year. The car was ordered by the dealer/MB Italia in 1966.
<<543 = Italy Destination/Dealer>> 543 is country code for Italy.
<<2581 = ?>> The 2581th order in that year/ordering sequence from Italy.

Thanks, Rodd. Unfortunately for me, this year the meeting at Joe's is much later than when we met two years ago. In July I will be in Europe.

Sorry Rodd,
Confused as always...
Where is the plate your talking about?? I wonder if the old girl has one. I think the wings (fenders) have been replaced at some point
Yes I have a "VIN" plate on the bulkhead, left side of engine bay looking from the front
Also where is the hardtop number usually found??

Malc,

The number plate being referred to (with the paint code, body no infor) should be on the left (drivers, LHD cars) side inner fender well. It should be quite obvious when you open the hood. I think there are several pictures of the plate on the site. You should be able to find that by running a search.

The hardtop number is stamped on the underside of the top at the rear window flange, drivers side, I think.

Klaus,
That is unfortunate, you will be missed!  Thank you so much for the details, I have wondered (and asked) about them since I bought the car in 2000.  You are correct, my car was purchased with hard top only.  Perhaps the "6" (where you have a "-") is for the Italian-spec options like the fender turn signals?  Also, I have a very rare or unique paint/interior color combination, perhaps the "6" indicates the car was special ordered with particular options or something?

Thanks,
