Restoring a 280

Good afternoon all.
I have just started to restore a 1970 280sl and would like to ask if anyone could point me in the right directions for different aspects of the car. Ie structural parts floors chassis parts etc I need to re trim and pad the seats MB tex and re carpet,the rest of the trim is quite good.Also a lot of the weather seals could do with replacements . I know i can send it to someone to do it all but unfortunately not in my budget. Not trying to make it a show winner just a sound useble classic. I am in the UK.

Hi,

I got my floor panels from SLS in Germany.  I did try MB in Poole (they have a classic parts dept), but they didn't have the floor panels.  I did however get some of my other panels from MB in Poole (Inner wings etc).

There are many places for interiors.  I have just ordered a complete new interior from KHM, you can look at one of my previous posts with some of the feedback and possible other suppliers below.  Also there is a suppliers list in the Technical Manual.

Having recently restored my 71, I can give you the following recommendations in terms of exterior items
1-if you are going to pull the tach, cluster and speedometer, send them out for service.  Now is the time.
2-replace all bulbs now
3-all rubber seals that touch glass should be OEM.  The truck should also be OEM.  I have also used OEM door seals because I heard there were issues with these too, but some people have used aftermarket.
4-if anything needs to be re chromed---do it now.
5-replace windshield?  (also plenty of advice as to the sequence of steps to do this here on our site)

Are you doing engine work?  How is your exhaust?--I have plenty of advise as it relates to other things as well.

Keep in mind that ALL 113 floor pans are made by K&K in Michigan. Even floor pans sold by MB. You may be able to get them at a better price directly from source.

I'm just going by what I was told.  SLS sells K&K floor pans and they end up all over the world. Why would someone go to the bother of reinventing floor pans when there's already plenty of them right now?

Well, there are things behind the scene. The repro parts market is complex indeed.
When it comes to Klokkerholm, for instance the "dansk" (Danish) fuel tanks were discussed in the Forum recently. I.e. parts manufactured at one source but sold via distributors in various constellations...
