Rear axel gaskets

Are both the axel front cover plate and the left axel housing that mates up to the gear housing suppose to have gaskets?

My parts list and diagram does not show gaskets there. Doesn't mean there weren't any. My list only shows what is still available

 No gaskets ...machined surface.

Having worked mostly on classic motorcycles for the last 25 years, I am using "Hondabond" (available at any Honda motorcycle dealer) for these kind of jobs. I believe Yamaha has a similar product called "Yamabond"

Many good products out there these days. Be sure to use those which are rated for the liquids being sealed.

Yamabond is for sure a good product and have used that several times. But the biggest drawback here is that when the metal pieces go back together, the gap is minimal. Meaning that it will squeeze out 95% of the product you put on the surface. So that excess product is going to go somewhere and maybe some on the inside which may not be good.

You might consider Permatex #2 which a non-hardening, gooey sealant meant for this type of application. Unlike Yamabond, you can apply a VERY thin layer of #2 and it won't squeeze out as bad. #2 has been around longer than roaches.

Sure, that's a concern! Applying a sealant requires some care.

Yes Wallace, I use permatext #2 also. I scrape clean both surfaces, and check them for burs or unevenness with a flat file. Clean both halves with alcohol then coat both surfaces with a very thin coat of permatext.
