Strange Paint Job - Hubcaps

I've never seen two tone painted hubcaps like on this 230SL. Is this a thing or did someone just get cute with the spray gun?

Yes. The colour (paint) on the hubcap was one shade only, and matched the Hard Top when car was delivered from factory
