2015 ML Bluetec schreeching windows
« on: October 11, 2018, 20:23:27 »
It's like fingernails on a blackboard!
The 2 front windows on my ML have developed a loud , dry schreech sound when I put either window down.
The rear windows ( seldom used) are fine.
It's telling that in the rain the windows are silent.
I have tried cleaning the felt tracks with soap and water but it dried the schreech returned. I didn't want to start using WD-40 or other type petroleum lubricants for fear they could damage the felt runners.
I don't want to resort with removing the inside door panels and am looking for advice on how to solve.
It has to be something that has occurred before.
Looking for a quick fix.

thanks,

jz

Wrong car.  ;)  Get rid of that low-quality thing and get a proper constructed car, e.g. a W201.

Okay..., this is not what you want to hear. :o
The most likely reason is that something has dried out (where grease or a plastic part was before).

Most likely not. ???
I do not see any other chance than removing the door panel, the plastic foil and see behind what causes the window lifter to make noise.
Just plain seeking the source of noise.

A starting point would be to find videos of how to pop off the door card on youtube... It's general a few screws and tabs, not difficult but takes gentle persuasion.

That should give you visibility to whatever is making the noise, probably a metal cable on worn plastic...

I did not know there were 2015 MLs... I got mine December 2014 and I thought it was the last one...

Like in the quoted piece: you tube, door panel removal video - and do it. Will take you a couple of hours probably (I did this exercise with rear end flad panel in my ML).

Thanks gentlemen,
I think before I resort to door panel removal I am going to try some cleaning and lubing with a dry silicone spray in the side tracks. That is a tip I got from an auto glass guy yesterday.
Achim, the W166 paired with the 4 cyl diesel bluetec engine is sublime combo. No run flat tires. I get 30 mph downhill . The handling, speed and response rivals my 250 SL !

Zak,

There was a discussion thread of sorts on this topic some years back on Benzworld.org:

https://www.benzworld.org/forums/w166-m-class-gle-class/1670540-screeching-windows-2.html

Seems there might have been an MB TSB on the matter...which may have involved silicone lube spray.

Maybe your friendly local dealer service advisor can help find the TSB...

Good memory Mike.
Yes the silicone spray did the trick for me and silenced my screeching windows.
I bought a can of food grade silicone spray with the long slim nozzle- like the WD-40 can.
I shot a thin spray into the vertical window tracks with the windows down, working from the bottom up.
After 2 applications the windows worked silently and I must say they moved faster up and down. So the dry screeching also created friction as well as noise that the silicone eliminated both.
So this solution works. Easy fix. Let's see how long it lasts.

thanks,
