My Body doesnt seem to have the rear rail.  Is this specific for certain model?  Photo hopefully clarifies the piece I am talking about.

I have that rail but on the other side. Handle inboard but the rail nearer the line of the drivers seat, and yours (on an RHD) is behind the passenger seat

The "front" of the (sideways facing) Kinder seat clips into it. But I thought Kinder seats were all on the exhaust side of the car (ie behind the (RHD) drivers seat

My car was a California Coupe.. but has soft top and hard top.  I assume this rail is for kinder seat only?

Well, no..
This "rail" with the two D shaped fittings is the mounting point for the two wooden trays (lids, shelves). They, like the Kinder seat pad, have clips that snap onto the D fittings. Note that these shelves are of different width

So for a "shelf" car there should be 2 rails and for a "seat" car, just one?

No. There is only one rail, on all W113 Pagoda cars except the 250/280SL California type (rear bench seat, no soft top).
The rail is situated slightly to the left of the middle line of the car. As per Steven's picture.
This rail, with its two D shaped fittings, serves both purposes. To support shelves, or Kinder transverse seat pad (when that extra option is fitted).
I borrow a picture here, for further illustration

I always wondered why that piece has two "handles" on it. Thanks!
(It always helps to take lots of photos!)

Ah this all makes sense now, I shall have a look tomorrow at my body to see if there are any remnants of the rail.  If not I may need to make/buy one for installing.
