seat back springs?
« on: October 09, 2018, 14:43:54 »
hello
I have my seats apart to replace the covers and noticed a few of the flat "springs" are broken...
are these available?

After an exhaustive search of not finding any information i thought I would create a new thread.

thanks matt

Hi,
You can buy these flat springs so called "Nosag Wellenfedern" in upholstery shops by running meter.

Hello Wolfgang,

Now I have to oppose a bit..., sorry please for that. ???
Matt (merill) is referring to the flat springs in the seat back (Rückenlehne), not the Nosag ones in the seat cushion (Sitzkissen)...

Well...,
I am not aware of any shop where you could buy these springs 'by the meter'. :(

This is special steel (spring steel), and always broken in the curves/bends; this is not available.
Specialized seat repair shops can make them by heating, bending and cooling down (hardening).

For my seats I used a specialized shop near Munich;
but I don't have any sources for that stuff separately....

Talk to a few upholstery shops ...

Best,

Achim

Don't know if this works for the seat springs, but...

I have been lucky to find odd parts for my SL at a local junkyard that specializes in German cars. Looking for /8 parts, 250SE, 280SE, SEL and others I was able to find quite some stuff.
MB was very good to use common parts across their product line and some parts are used on quite a few models. Maybe some old seats from a different model will yield what you are looking for.

Hi Achim,
you are right, Matt means these flat springs (see att. picture).
I've never seen these springs separtely to buy. In my opinion they belong to the seat frame and I would  use spring steel or  "Wellenfedern" as well.

Can you weld it?  When I recovered the seats one or two of the bottom springs were broken. I did weld it nearly 20 years ago and it still works fine.  I would think the back springs would be easier.  I used a flux cored wire welder.

my upholstery shop has a welder they use to repair the flat seat back springs.

I removed the seat back and dropped it off yesterday.  there are 4 breaks to be repaired.
